Turning a Trip into Purpose: Preparing for Honduras This September

This coming September, Ill be heading back to Honduras-a place that holds a special place in my heart. While the trip is centered around a family wedding, I’ve decided to turn it into something much more than just a visit. I’m using it as an opportunity to serve, love, and do what I believe Im called to do: give back.

Over the years, I’ve been blessed to take part in several mission trips through our nonprofit, Our Hearts for the World, Inc. I typically travel to Honduras twice a year:

  • Once in March or April for a missions trip

  • And again in December for our annual Christmas Toy Drive

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to go earlier this year-and honestly, thats been on my heart. So as I prepare for this trip in September, I’m not just going to celebrate family. I’m going to serve families.

Still on Mission

On this trip, we’ll be doing what we’ve always done-providing groceries for families in need, being present, and showing love in real, practical ways. But there’s a new focus growing in my heart-something I believe God is calling us to step into more intentionally:

Helping Kids Get to School

The reality is hard:
Many children in Honduras aren’t in school

Not because they don’t want to learn.
Not because their parents don’t value education
But because they simply can’t afford it.

Families often lack money for:

  • School supplies

  • Uniforms

  • Transportation

  • Even basic registration costs

And because of that, kids grow up unable to read, write, or do the very things we sometimes take for granted-like recognizing letters, knowing their colors, or writing their names.

Here’s what the data tells us:

About 86.6% of primary-aged children in Honduras are enrolled in school, meaning roughly 13-14% are not.

But when it comes to secondary education, only around 55% of eligible children are enrolled-leaving nearly 45% out of school during those critical formative years.

These numbers are more than statistics-they represent real kids, with real dreams, and real challenges. And it breaks my heart.

A New Mission Within the Mission

So, during this trip, Ill be taking intentional time to gather information-to sit with local families, teachers, and leaders, and find out:

  • What exactly is keeping these children from attending school?

  • What does it cost to send a child to school-not just tuition, but supplies, uniforms, transportation?

  • What kind of commitment would parents need to make on their end?

  • How can Our Hearts for the World, Inc. create a sustainable, long-term way to support education in these communities?

I don’t want this to be a one-time handout. I want it to be something that empowers families, honors their dignity, and equips children with the opportunity to dream again-to learn their names, write their future, and read the world around them.

How You Can Be A Part of It

As we prepare for this trip, here’s how you can get involved:

✅Grocery Donations
As always, we’ll be collecting donations to buy groceries and essentials for families in need. Every dollar makes a direct impact.

✅Child Sponsorship (Coming Soon)
Once I return with the information, Ill share the details on how we can sponsor children to go to school-what it will cost, what’s needed, and how we’ll keep it sustainable.

Want to Help Today?

If you’d like to give toward this September trip-whether its to help us buy groceries for families or to help us begin preparing for school sponsorships-you can make a donation through our nonprofit:

Our Hearts for the World, Inc.-Donation Page-
